The two regions have almost opposite seasons. Here is how to time your journey for snow, blossom, meadows or high passes.
Two calendars, one journey
Kashmir is a four-season destination; Ladakh is, for most travellers, a summer one. That means the best months to combine both are June to September, when the Zoji La road is open and the valleys are green.
Spring in Kashmir
From late March the almond trees blossom, followed by the tulip garden in April. It is a short window and books up fast.
Summer in Ladakh
Flights run year-round, but the high passes and lakes are at their best from June to September. Always allow two nights in Leh to acclimatise.
Autumn colour
October and November bring the chinar trees into flame and the saffron harvest at Pampore — our favourite time for photographers.
Winter
Gulmarg’s snow season runs from December to March. Srinagar is cold, quiet and beautiful.
